M and M Cookie Mix in a Jar

by Natasha on December 20, 2012

When it comes to cookies, there’s nothing quite like homemade, but not everyone has the time or the inclination to make them from scratch. That’s why I love this cookie mix in a mason jar. It’s the perfect last minute holiday gift, because it literally comes together in minutes, and it looks beautiful and festive. Everything is pre measured for the person on the receiving end, and there’s no mixer required. Just dump and stir, stick them in the oven, and they’re good to go.

The recipe is simple. Here’s what you will need:

1 wide-mouth quart (4-cup) canning jars with lid and rings (I used smooth sided Ball jars that I found at Michael’s)
2 cups all purpose flour
1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda
1⁄4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3⁄4 cups brown sugar, packed
1⁄4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup M&M-brand chocolate candies
1/2 semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Layer the flour mixture, brown sugar, granulated sugar, M&Ms, and chocolate chips in the jar. Pack each ingredient down after layering.

Directions to attach to the jar:
1. Preheat the oven 350 degrees fahrenheit and line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.
2. Empty jar of cookie mix into mixing bowl and combine throughly.
3. Add 3/4 cup of butter that has been melted slightly in the microwave, 1 beaten egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix until completely blended. Chill the dough for 1/2 hour.
4. Use a cookie scoop or a spoon to form 1-inch balls, and place onto the lined cookie sheet. Bake until the edges are lightly browned, about 12 to 14 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes.

Notes:

After I tested out the original recipe, I found my dough to be somewhat dry and crumbly, so I used 3/4 cup butter rather than the 1/2 cup butter that was called for, and they turned out great. I also used the cute M&M printables found here, but since I made some modifications to the recipe, I printed out my own directions and attached them to the jar.

What beautiful photography! I loooove M&M cookies and I was planning to give away cookies in a jar this year but did not have time to make them. I know I know they don’t take very long but I’m regretting it now! These are a perfect recipe to stuff inside them. :)
